Laverne Cox, 31, and Caitlyn Jenner, 65,(Both men turn women) have been outspoken supporters of each other for weeks now, and on Monday’s Late Late Show, the Orange Is The New Black star opened up about meeting the former Olympian for the first time. Spoiler alert: the ladies were totally vibing!
“[It was] pretty awesome,” Cox told host James Corden of their first meeting. “We had spoken on the phone several times. She called me the day after her ESPYs speech actually. She’s such a sweet woman, loves her family, and just thinking about that whole paparazzi life that she has, I don’t want that life.”
The transgender actress, who first met Jenner at an advanced screening of her new documentary series I am Cait on July 19, shared a clip of the show’s first season, explaining the added difficulties Jenner has faced by making her transition in the public eye.
“You’ll see in the first episode of that show that she sometimes has to change cars multiple times to dodge the paparazzi,” Cox revealed. “Which is an insane way to live. When I think about transitioning in my twenties as a black transgender woman who was working class and struggling to make it in New York City, it’s completely different from Caitlyn’s very public experience.”
The transgender actress continued to say that she admired the way Caitlyn has handled herself and admitted she would not want that kind of celebrity status for herself. “There’s no way she could have transitioned privately, and I think she’s [Caitlyn] doing it very eloquently and beautifully publicly.”
In addition to gushing about her new pal, Cox also took to Instagram on July 19 to share a sweet snap (pictured above) of their first meeting, writing: “@caitlynjenner and I finally met in person at a special private advance screening of #IAmCait.#TransIsBeautiful #girlslikeus#caitlynjenner.” Consider us jealous!
