PORT HARCOURT— Activities went on smoothly in the various local government area secretariats in Rivers State, yesterday, as the Caretaker Committee Chairmen, members and staff had unhindered access to their offices.
At the Port Harcourt City Local Government secretariat, two Police patrol vehicles with a handful of policemen were at the gate. Staff and visitors were allowed unrestrained access to the secretariat for the day’s business. There was tension on Monday evening in Port Harcourt after the National Industrial Court, Bayelsa State rose on a matter filed by the 22 council chairmen in Port Harcourt, before they were sacked by Justice Lambo Akambi of a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt. Some media houses had reported that Justice James Agbadu-Fishim of the Industrial Court had on Monday ordered that the sacked council executives be reinstated. The state Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr Davies Ikanya had also called for the immediate reinstatement of the sacked executives. The fear was that by yesterday, supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the APC will clash at the premises of the various councils and also cripple the economic life of the state with their actions. This was not to be as Port Harcourt, the state capital and several other parts of the state remained calm. The state Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Mr Ema Aguma told newsmen on Monday night in Port Harcourt that the Industrial Court in Bayelsa State did not set aside the verdict of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt that sacked the 22 council executives, pleading that the media should double check information before going to press. Aguma who circulated photocopies of the certified true copy of proceedings at the Industrial Court, noted that the matter was only adjourned to October 6, 2015 for hearing of all pending applications as the court advised parties to file their necessary processes with supportive exhibits. Meantime, Chairman of the APC in the state, Mr Ikanya reiterated his call for reinstatement of the sacked council executives. Speaking through his media aide, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, Ikanya said the judgement of the Industrial Court reinstated the sacked council executives. He urged the Police to enforce compliance with the alleged judgement. On his part media aide to the governor, Mr Opunabo Nko-Tariah, called on the Police to arrest those trying to instigate political crisis in the state through deliberate distortion of truth, adding that people of the state were happy with the administration of Governor Nyesom Wike. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com
