Count Joel McHale as someone who supports the decision to honor Caitlyn Jenner at the upcoming ESPY Awards.
The actor/comedian – who will be hosting the annual ESPN award show on July 15 – said while some have criticized the decision to give Jenner the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, he absolutely feels it was a good call.
"Some people don't think it's courageous and some people do think it’s courageous what she has done —and I’m in the courageous boat," Joel told Access Hollywood of Caitlyn's public reveal earlier this month. "I believe that she is deserving."
But that's not to slight any of the other individuals who may have been considered for the honor.
"There are so many deserving [people] out there and some of them are going to be getting this award in the future is my guess," Joel added. "There are a lot of deserving athletes out there as is Caitlyn Jenner."
Of course, the primary focus for Joel (who is also working with Dunkin' Donuts to promote their Visa Checkout isn't who wins at the ESPY Awards – it's to keep the audience at home and inside the Microsoft Theater entertained.
"It’s so funny because I’m the host of this thing and my job is to make sure the jokes land and that’s the thing that I care about," Joel said of constantly being asked about Caitlyn's award. "I'm not in charge of choosing who gets these awards, but I do think Caitlyn is deserving.
"When is the last time they asked [perennial Oscars host] Billy Crystal about the Best Picture [category]?" he laughed.
